Nickelodeon Classic (formerly MTV Classic) is an American television network which is operated by Viacom Kids and Family Group, a unit of Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom.

History[]

As MTV Classic[]

MTV Classic launched in April 12, 2010 and replaced MTV Smooth Jazz, a smooth jazz and adult contemporary channel.

MTV Classic primarily featured a mainstream rock/adult hits-formatted mix of music videos and concert footage from the 1970s through the mid-1990s, though it formerly included a wider range of genres and time periods. The network originally played only videos but had a varied line-up of music-themed programs. This included themed compilation shows of music videos and concert footage, such as music videos focused on Heavy Metal music or on music of the 1980s, music documentaries such as the Classic Albums series, music themed movies, and full-length concerts. They also rebroadcast programs first shown on the main MTV channel, including House of Pop and Yo! Hip Hop Mix.

The final show to be broadcast before the re-brand to Nickelodeon Classic was MTV Classic 120 Minutes with "Don't Talk" by 10,000 Maniacs serving as the final music video.

As Nickelodeon Classic[]

On June 27, 2016, during the summer of 2016, the network was rebranded as Nickelodeon Classic; the channel's programming continues to focus on classic music videos and programming (including episodes of Pinwheel and You Can't Do That on Television), but skews more towards the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. The re-branded network also airs encores of past Nickelodeon original series such as Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, CatDog and The Angry Beavers. The network's re-launch included a broadcast of Nickelodeon's first hour on the air, which was also simulcast on Nickelodeon and online via Facebook live streaming. Several MTV Classic programs were retained in the existing schedule, albeit in late night.
